Student Stories: From Failing Add Maths to A+

Before and after. Most parents who contact Chegu Khairi are not asking whether their child can get an A+ - they are asking whether a child who is failing can pass. These are the answers, in the students' and parents' own words, with the marked papers where they exist.

Ahmad joined in Form 3, March 2022, for Maths. His first months looked like most Form 3 students': a handful of answers a month, 90% right one month, 40% the next.

Then Add Maths. Through Form 4 the volume arrived - 99 answers in July 2023, 123 in September - at 84 to 94% right. His weakest topics that year were the usual Form 4 walls: quadratic functions, linear law, and vectors at 71%.

In his SPM year he sent 1,556 homework answers - 346 in August alone, 64 on one Sunday the week before the paper - and finished first of 41 in his class for homework done across 2024: eleven times the typical student, at 90% first-time accuracy.

The topic that tells the story: vectors went from 71% to 95%. Quadratic functions 77% to 90%. Simultaneous equations to 100%. And honestly, linear law and solution of triangles stayed his hardest topics into Form 5 - he answered them 110 and 77 times anyway.

Over three years, almost all of it online: 2,236 answers on 99 papers, 176 corrections resubmitted, four revision workshops, 249 classes attended. Modul Pintas 2024, Add Maths Kertas 2: 86/100.

Zakwan came in June 2022, Form 4. His own target then, in his words, was "asalkan pass". His first month in the app was 34 answers, every one correct - he was better than he thought. What the app recorded after that is what "already good" becomes when it is worked at.

In December 2022, the school holiday before Form 5, he sent 326 answers in one month - 65 of them on 13 December - at 93% right. A Form 4 student finishing the Form 4 syllabus a second time before Form 5 began.

Through 2023 he added the Form 5 topics at the same standard: integration 95%, permutations and combinations 96%, functions 97%, index numbers 100%. He joined every trial-paper workshop offered, five of them, and attended 238 classes. September 2023, the month before the trials: 190 answers at 92%.

Sixteen months: 1,164 answers, 93% right first time, 73 papers. The one topic that troubled him was solution of triangles in Form 5 - 62% on 21 attempts - and it is the one he took a workshop on. SPM 2023: A+ for both subjects. The result slip is in the gallery.

At his school's graduation, the slide of people who inspired him listed his teachers - and Chegu Khairi.

What these students have in common

Every one of them did the homework. Zakwan says it, Nur Shana says it, Chegu Khairi says it in the first class: the marking, the reports and the class discussion only work on work that was handed in. The second thing they have in common is that the gap was usually not in the Form 4 chapter they were stuck on, but in Form 2 or Form 3 algebra underneath it - which is where the teaching starts.
